Stop Comment Spam
Nowadays, spams in the blog comments or commonly known as comment spam are getting annoying. Related to that comment spam, yesterday I made an experiment by deactivating the plugin SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam which usually I used to filter out spam comments from the generic non spam comment and that morning I checked in my Akismet plugin and found 21 new comments detected as spam.
Wow, what a huge spam !! ![]()
But thanks to Akismet who correctly handle it, by the way
Just like email spam, comment spam also has one purpose only which is promoting spammer’s website and make him money. Most of those spams were no doubt generated by automatic machine called spam bot which automatically searched comment form and then post an automatic desired random comment such as promoting commercial services. Usually those types of comments are irrelevant to the post and also contain several links in the comment body which pointing to the promoted commercial service. Some other are clever spam bot which usually do not contain a link in the comment body and they often look like legitimate comments, but if you take a closer look at them you will find if that type of comment have an url in the url form pointing to the promoted commercial service. Beside of that automatic spam bot comment, there were also some human manually filled comment spams which usually the comment still related to the post or even well written but still have url in the url form pointing to the something they promoted.
Comments can be a really good source of information and an efficient way of engaging a site’s users in discussions. Therefore, this valuable content should not be replaced by gibberish nonsense keywords and links. And for that, I decided to activate plugin SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam again as the first challenge response to filter out machine spam bot comment from human filled comment.By activating that plugin, that means this blog is go back into three method for combating spam comment which are by Captcha as the first filter, and then by akismet as the second filter, and finally by manually look into approved comment for comment which approved by captcha and akismet. Yup, I think multiple step is better that one step at the momment.

@kabarkan dg blog, Ya man, you also can restrict it by using .htaccess for blocking the suspected ip spam bot. I also use it to deferentiate between real search engine bot and spam bot/content grabber.
