Upgrade Android Xperia X10 mini pro into Android 2.1

After more than three weeks using Android 1.6 (Donut), this morning I upgraded my wife Android powered phone, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, from native Android 1.6 (Donut) into Android 2.1 (Eclair). That update was forced due to some error happened when the phone was restarted or turned on. That error made some application need to be killed. Eventhough after that application was killed the Xperia X10 mini pro still running well, but that error was very annoying. Beside of that, The Xperia X10 mini pro which running Android Donut have issue in Bluetooth connection and another performances such as battery performance. According to Sony Ericsson website, by doing the update software, it will improve and enhance some features like Improved Bluetooth™ functionality with support for sending and receiving files, new backup and restore application with extended content back up, automatic synchronization of contact pictures between Facebook™ and phone book, improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in messages, and of course upgrade of the Android platform to Android Eclair which have better performance compared to Android Donut.

By searching on the internet regarding the Android update process especially for Xperia X10 mini pro, I was able to take some conclusion that the update process was easy and simple. The steps could be summaries into four steps which were support software application installation in laptop or pc, backup and restore application installation and followed by backup data, update Android and another software, and the last was restore the backup data back into the phone. First of all, we need an internet connection for downloading supporting software as well as downloading main update software. The faster internet connection we have, the quicker process of updating software which we would get. At that moment, I used approximatelly 125 KB/s data connection via GSM modem and it took time approximately two hours for updating the android including preparation of supporting software download and installation in the laptop until the Xperia X10 mini pro phone ready to be used again. The support application software which needs to be downloaded was the latest version of PC Companion for Xperia X10 mini pro. That application can be downloaded at Sony Ericsson Website. It needed 7 minutes to download that 24.8 Mbyte exe file and then installed it on the laptop. Then I run the PC Companion, connected the Xperia X10 mini pro into the laptop via USB cable, and then clicked connect your phone at the phone screen. PC Companion then would search for software update automatically.

The second step was installed backup and restore application in the Xperia X10 mini pro phone. For that purpose, I should disconnect the phone by click turn off usb storage and then disconnect the USB cable. Based on the information from the previous step, then I installed backup and restore application from Sony Ericsson Website. After that, I did backup some important data like contact, sms, bookmark, system setting, etc. After backup process completed, then we would move into third step. I connected the Xperia X10 mini pro phone via USB cable again into the laptop with pressing the back button while put the usb cable into the Xperia X10 mini pro phone and continue the process of updating Android in PC Companion application. The PC companion guided the update process via easy on screen picture so we could follow the step easily. After update process finished, then I disconnected USB cable from the phone and then turned on the phone. After the phone run well, then I checked the version of Android in the system setting menu and found that the Android version had been updated into Android 2.1 Eclair.

Actually, until this step, I had finished the update process but all the data which had been put in the previous Android version were gone just like new phone. So, in order to make the previous data back, we should also follow the last step. In the last step, I restored the backup data which i did in the second step back into the phone via backup and restore application in the phone. That process made my important data back into the phone just like before i updated. I am glad that after Android was updated, the error which happen when the phone was turned on in the previous Android version did not appeared again. The different of Android 1.6 donut and Android 2.1 Eclair which clearly appear were the new icon and symbol and the way of the unlock phone from the standby mode into the active mode. In Android 2.1 Eclair, the unlock key can be done by draging the unlock symbol in the screen into the right. Now, I am still exploring this Xperia X10 mini pro with new Android 2.1 Eclair version and have not found much new interesting finding, if I get the new one compare to the previous version, I will update this page.
Oya, if you want to update your Xperia X10 mini pro by yourself, you can find the complete step by step tutorial for updating the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro from Android 1.6 into Android 2.1 on

    Hi,
Do you face Gtalk application error in your Android version? My gtalk error with the chat message come not in sequential :(

  6. @xperia user,
I also face that annoying not in sequential gtalk chat message. But some of my friends suggest for using manual time and then make the time is around 5 minutes leading or lagging than the actual time depend on the error in your chat sequential. It works for my xperia x10 mini pro. May be you can try that suggestion also. :shkhand:
